A Century of Faith
SHANGHAI Elegance
Shanghai Community Fellowship Church

Hidden behind walls of ivy on one of Shanghai’s most beautiful streets — this is the Hengshan Community Church, and it has been standing here since 1925.

Built by a group of American expatriates who had outgrown their rented spaces, funds were raised to construct a permanent non-denominational Protestant church. A plot of land on what was then Avenue Pétain — today’s Hengshan Road — was purchased in 1923 from the Shanghai American School, and construction began immediately. The Gothic building was completed in 1925, originally called the Harmonious Church — the largest Christian church in Shanghai at the time.

Designed by the Mission Architects Bureau in a modern Gothic style, the building features soaring wooden cathedral ceilings, arched stone corridors, and ivy-draped red brick walls that have become one of the most photographed facades in the French Concession. Covering over 7,330 square meters, the church can hold over 1,400 people and has welcomed world leaders including former US President Jimmy Carter and the King and Queen of Norway.

This is also home to SCF — Shanghai Community Fellowship (shanghaifellowship.org) — the international church I attend every single week.

For foreigners and expats — a valid foreign passport is required for entry to the English service:
🕐 English Service — Sunday 2:00 PM

For local Chinese visitors:
🕐 Wednesday — 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 7:00 PM
🕐 Thursday — 1:00 PM
🕐 Sunday — 7:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 7:00 PM

If you are an expat or visitor in Shanghai looking for a warm English-speaking church community — doors are open to everyone. Come as you are.

I have been attending here for years — and every time I walk through those doors, the century disappears.

Those grand wooden doors have been standing since 1924 — and what they frame today is nothing short of magic.

The Shanghai Postal Museum was designed by the British architectural firm Stewardson & Spence, built between 1922 and 1924. Before this building existed, the previous postal administration premises had become too small — so land was acquired on the north bank of Suzhou Creek to build a grand new headquarters, right in the heart of the Shanghai International Settlement.

The result was a masterpiece — an eclectic mix of European Classical and Baroque styles, featuring three-story Corinthian columns and statues of Greek gods: Hermes the messenger, Eros and Aphrodite. In 2003, parts of the building were converted into the Shanghai Postal Museum, and admission remains free to this day.

Standing here, camera in hand, I realized — this doorway hasn’t changed. Only the skyline behind it has.
