Faith Through the Lens SHANGHAI Elegance A world

Faith Through the Lens
SHANGHAI Elegance

A world inside a sphere — and inside that sphere, a church that has been standing since 1844.

The Zhangpuqiao Catholic Church — full name: Catholic Church of the Original Sin of Our Lady of Zhangpuqiao — was founded in 1844, built a full 30 years before the famous Sheshan Cathedral was constructed. During the more than 100 years of the ban on Christianity in China, Catholics in Zhangpuqiao and surrounding villages maintained their faith quietly underground. It was only in 1844, after Catholicism was restored to legal status in China, that this church finally came to stand above ground — a symbol of a faith that refused to disappear.

I woke up early and made the journey specifically for the golden hour light — Metro Line 15, then Line 9, then a taxi into Songjiang. The sky had other plans. Cloudy, overcast, a little rain. But sometimes the soft diffused light of an overcast morning gives you something a harsh sunrise never could — and the crystal ball did the rest.

The world flips upside down inside the sphere, the background becomes the frame, and suddenly a 180-year-old church looks like something from another dimension.

This is Shanghai — where centuries of faith and history are waiting to be discovered just outside the city.

The Art of Contrast
SHANGHAI Elegance

One frame. One hundred years of Shanghai compressed into a single street corner.

This shot was taken at the intersection of Tiantong Road and Jiangxi Road — a quiet backstreet behind the Shanghai Postal Museum that most visitors walk straight past. But stop here for a moment and you begin to see what makes Shanghai truly unlike any other city on earth.

On the right — warm red brick walls from the 1920s, built during the height of the Shanghai International Settlement era, when this entire neighborhood was one of the most cosmopolitan districts in Asia. Jiangxi Road is one of Shanghai’s officially preserved heritage roads, and the buildings lining it still carry the weight of that era — trading houses, banks, and administrative buildings that shaped modern China.
Historic-shanghai

On the left — glass towers rise sharp against a cloudy sky, including the Star Cloud Center, representing the new Hongkou District that has quietly become one of Shanghai’s most exciting redevelopment zones in recent years.

In between — everyday Shanghai. Delivery riders, buses, traffic lights counting down. The city does not pause for history. It simply builds around it.

This is what I love about shooting here. You do not need to go to the Bund for the contrast. Sometimes the best frame is the one nobody else stopped to take.

Shanghai Community Fellowship Church

Hidden behind walls of ivy on one of Shanghai’s most beautiful streets — this is the Hengshan Community Church, and it has been standing here since 1925.

Built by a group of American expatriates who had outgrown their rented spaces, funds were raised to construct a permanent non-denominational Protestant church. A plot of land on what was then Avenue Pétain — today’s Hengshan Road — was purchased in 1923 from the Shanghai American School, and construction began immediately. The Gothic building was completed in 1925, originally called the Harmonious Church — the largest Christian church in Shanghai at the time.

Designed by the Mission Architects Bureau in a modern Gothic style, the building features soaring wooden cathedral ceilings, arched stone corridors, and ivy-draped red brick walls that have become one of the most photographed facades in the French Concession. Covering over 7,330 square meters, the church can hold over 1,400 people and has welcomed world leaders including former US President Jimmy Carter and the King and Queen of Norway.

This is also home to SCF — Shanghai Community Fellowship (shanghaifellowship.org) — the international church I attend every single week.

For foreigners and expats — a valid foreign passport is required for entry to the English service:
🕐 English Service — Sunday 2:00 PM

For local Chinese visitors:
🕐 Wednesday — 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 7:00 PM
🕐 Thursday — 1:00 PM
🕐 Sunday — 7:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 7:00 PM

If you are an expat or visitor in Shanghai looking for a warm English-speaking church community — doors are open to everyone. Come as you are.

I have been attending here for years — and every time I walk through those doors, the century disappears.

River of Dreams Where the Huangpu River meets the

Those grand wooden doors have been standing since

Those grand wooden doors have been standing since 1924 — and what they frame today is nothing short of magic.

The Shanghai Postal Museum was designed by the British architectural firm Stewardson & Spence, built between 1922 and 1924. Before this building existed, the previous postal administration premises had become too small — so land was acquired on the north bank of Suzhou Creek to build a grand new headquarters, right in the heart of the Shanghai International Settlement.

The result was a masterpiece — an eclectic mix of European Classical and Baroque styles, featuring three-story Corinthian columns and statues of Greek gods: Hermes the messenger, Eros and Aphrodite. In 2003, parts of the building were converted into the Shanghai Postal Museum, and admission remains free to this day.

Standing here, camera in hand, I realized — this doorway hasn’t changed. Only the skyline behind it has.
